Established in 2002 at Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario, the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) provides the following services:
Research and Development Services: Proof of concept, Product testing, Engineering Design, Laboratory Analyses for Applied Research, Technology Development, Problem Solving, Performance Measurement, Verification, Certification Piloting, Field Demonstration, Knowledge Transfer Services, Scientific report writing, Presentation of results at conferences, Publishing in Peer Reviewed Lit., Outreach/Workshops/other public events (e.g. Technology Showcase);
Management Services: Project Management, Project Coordination, Logistics, Facilitation Services, IP Protection Facilitation;
Advisory Services: Advocacy Services, Regulatory Guidance;
Training Services: Technical Training to meet employer needs;
Referral Services to other organizations for the following: Marketing Advisory Services, Commercialization, Business Mentorship, Venture Capital.
The CAWT has unique infrastructure in the form of 2000 sq ft experimental and pilot/demonstration greenhouse facility, environmental chamber, 6 outdoor pilot cells, 20 lined ponds, and a state of the art full service analytical laboratory Our research space has been upgraded recently to accommodate research on bioreactors that use high levels of toxic heavy metals.
The CAWT lab houses many types of instrumentation including: ICP-OES; AA; GC/ECD/MS; GC/MS for VOCCs; Ion Chromatograph; UV/VIS; Specific Ion Probes; Lab Spectrophotometers; CNS Machine; TOC auto-analyzer LC/MS/MS ICP-MS Anaerobiox Centrifuge GC-MS HPLC Luminometer Respirometer BOD Autosampler/Titrator Soxhlet extraction setup and a Block Digester. As well The CAWT works closely with Fleming’s Continuing Education and Contract Training Department to provide short courses on water and wastewater related courses .
