Dr. Sunny Kumar leads WaterTAP’s program to prepare water technology companies to seek and receive capital. He brings more than 10 years of experience working directly with seed and growth stage companies and positioning them for acceleration and attracting capital.
From 2007 to 2018, Sunny worked with numerous innovation mandated organizations across Ontario and Canada, including Ontario Centres of Excellence, MaRS Discovery District, and Canada Health Infoway, where he focused on deploying capital in strategic areas for economic development, sector growth and impact. During this time, he led the sourcing, due diligence, and closing of venture transactions in which several millions of dollars were deployed across many sectors, including water. He worked closely with dozens of portfolio companies by sitting on their Boards and provided active mentorship on seizing strategic market opportunities, commercialization plans, and investment attraction. Sunny has also been entrepreneur-in-residence at Innovation Factory in Hamilton, Canada, where he worked directly with seed and growth-stage companies providing hands on venture advisory.
Sunny has extensive experience in identifying market opportunities and building innovation programs from the ground up to address gaps. He did this work at the Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation at Baycrest Health Sciences, where he led the development of strategy, partnerships and programs for deploying $124M into the seniors’ sector.
Sunny completed his Honours Bachelor’s (Neuroscience), Masters’ and PhD (Molecular Oncology) at the University of Toronto, followed by post-doctoral fellowship training at Harvard Medical School (viral oncology). He contributes his academic and venture capital expertise by sitting on the Advisory Board of Genespark, an organization raising awareness and research funding for Kleefstra Syndrome.Return to Team
